One winter we had a plethora of eggs. Because of the weather conditions we had less customers driving up the driveway to buy them. I was tossing and turning. My mind was repeating “too many eggs, too many eggs. I then said to myself “ah, ha,” got out of bed and wrote this in the middle of the night. I slept like a cozy chick under her mom’s warm feathers the rest of the night.
Too Many Eggs
Too many, too many, too many eggs
What did we do?
We just gave them away!
They ate them for breakfast, snack, lunch and dinner
Scrambled, hard boiled, and fried was a winner
Sausage, Bacon and eggs cooked ‘til they’re poached
In cookies and cakes, and even on toast
Quiches, frittata, egg custard galore!
No matter how cooked, they all wanted more!
The more that we gave,
The more the hens laid
They kept coming and coming!
Laying and laying!
Hatching and Growing!
Growing and Crowing!
They spilled out the windows as they filled up the coop
Out to the bushes where they would roost
They didn’t stop there, even out towards the brook
Crossing the road — Everywhere you would look!
People arrived with trailers and carts
To take them away – just doing their part!
Each city was filled so on to the next
And the next and the next
And the next and the next!
On they continued in truckloads
And boat loads
Traveling on train loads
And on to more plane loads
Soon we discovered they had circled the globe!
This message is loud and clear so you’ll hear:
If you are thinking of raising chickens and eggs
Please give it some thought
And do it today
For all of this started with one chicken and egg.
